DEPUTY President Kgalema Motlanthe wasted no time in getting his new marriage formalised.
Just three weeks ago he finalised his divorce from his estranged wife Mapula in a Joburg court.
Now he’s tied the knot the traditional way with longtime lover Gugu Mtshali.
Motlanthe was at his lover’s home in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday to host the traditional Zulu ceremony of umembeso (exchange of gifts).
After he handed gifts to the business woman’s family during a ceremony at Imbali township, the two lovebirds embarked on their traditional wedding.
Family sources said the white wedding will take place in two months’ time at Motlanthe’s Gauteng home.
The traditional wedding was kept under wraps, and only close family and friends were invited. The couple wore traditional dress.
During the songs and dancing in the yard, Gugu (49) washed Motlanthe’s feet to show she will take good care of him.
Afterwards, Gugu confirmed to Daily Sun she was planning the white wedding.
“We planned this private ceremony for our loved ones down here in KZN,” she said. “It was more of a platform to bring both families together before the big wedding.”
A privileged neighbour, Boneni Makhathini (45), said she was invited only on Wednesday, and asked not to tell other neighbours as the couple wanted the event to be private.
“I knew they were preparing something when I saw Gugu’s brother up and down the whole week,” said Boneni. “He told me Motlanthe was coming to visit them at the weekend.
“I’m glad I was one of the people invited because we had so much fun.”
When Daily Sun visited the area on Sunday, family and friends were still mingling at Gugu’s family house.
A relative who didn’t want to be named said the couple deserved to be happy after their long marriages failed. “I’m glad their relationship will finally be official,” she said.
“For the past few years, Gugu has been seen at official events by Motlanthe’s side. Now Mzansi people will stop asking who she is. They will know she is Mrs Motlanthe.”
