THEY were ambushed and died in a hail of bullets.
Taxi owner Vusi Buthelezi and his cousin Philani Buthelezi were killed when unknown gunmen shot at their car.
The incident happened in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday.
Vusi (35) and Philani (32) were shot several times while sitting in a Toyota Conquest.
Police spokesman Captain Mega Ndobe said the motive for the killing is not known.
There is speculation that the killing is linked to taxi violence.
Ndobe told Daily Sun: “The dead men had parked on the side of the road when two men opened fire on them.
“The suspects sped off in a BMW.”
He said a few metres away two people were hit by stray bullets.
“It is alleged that the same suspects were shooting as they drove off away from the scene,” said Ndobe.
“Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened at the Vosloorus Police Station.”
A witness said a Nissan Hardbody bakkie parked in front of the two men.
“They looked as if they knew each other. Suddenly, a BMW stopped next to the two men and opened fire.
“I saw the Hardbody van speeding off and the BMW chased them. The suspects were armed.”
The aunt of the two victims, Mantombi Buthelezi (50), said the incident has shocked the whole family.
“They were killed like animals. Their wounds were terrible,” said Mantombi.
She said Vusi suspected he was on a hit list. “I used to hear people talking about hit men,” said Mantombi.
